The sexy nude carbon frame and choice components of the Propain Tyee CF look like the ticket price should be twice as much. But is its beauty more than skin deep, or has the additional cost of a carbon frame compromised the build and performance?
The When buying a Propain, the choice is completely yours. Using the online configurator you can choose from several upgrade packs to customise key components in one click, or you can dive deeper and make endless small changes to the suspension, brakes, wheels and more. We also chose Magura MT5 brakes with huge mm rotors front and rear. To get all that braking torque onto the trail, Propain fit aggressive Schwalbe Magic Mary tires front and rear with the lighter TLE sidewall and grippy Addix Soft compound.
The size L bike we tested features a mm reach with a mm wheelbase, but the bike feels stretched and longer, perhaps due to its low standover height. A very modern The mm tall seat tube means only a mm dropper can be used by shorter-legged riders. The exceptional mid-stroke support allows effortless preloading of the suspension, allowing you to pop into the air.
Even the flattest trails become A-lines. The riding position of the Propain Tyee CF has a very modern and racy feel and feels more stretched than the numbers would indicate with its low slung top-tube.
Uphill, anti-squat is high and the bike sits tall when pedalling. The long chainstays keep weight on the front wheel and the supportive suspension encourages out of the saddle sprinting. When we first tested the Propain Tyee CF at its launch, we rode the bike with an air shock and found the combination of the highly progressive virtual pivot PRO10 suspensions system and air shock harsh.
The real highlight is the exceptional mid-stroke support, allowing effortless preloading of the suspension to pop into the air. The trade-off for that support is that the Tyee does kick around a little when hammering through rock gardens or when full-travel is demanded —, better just to jump them then.
Through the corners, however, the integrated riding position and long mm chainstays provide sublime balance, allowing your to flick left and right with just a lively snap of your heels. The one-piece, asymmetric carbon swingarm is beautifully sculpted and the long, unbraced seat-stays allow some lateral flex of the rear wheel.
However, we did notice some suspension clunking when landing sideways with the counter-rotating linkages taking the load. The Magura MT5 brakes are potent stoppers and while they lack modulation, they make up for it in raw grunt. It feels far lighter, peppier and more lively than the other bikes in this test, without any nervousness at all. The very firm ramp-up of the rear suspension means the Propain is not as stable as the Nukeproof Mega on big hit terrain, but the long travel fork hangs in there if you have the skill.
The best climber in the test by far, the Propain is the clear winner if you are looking for an all-rounder. Tuning tips: select a faster rolling tire for the rear when ordering run a minimum of two tokens in the Lyrik fork to balance the firm ramp of the rear. The changes are significant throughout and include different wheel size 29in, This blend is made from T6 aluminium for the tubing, T6 aluminium for the rockers and axles, and T6 for the milled and forged parts of the frame.
Like the alloy frame, Propain has used different resin-impregnated sheets of carbon fibre and assorted layups to achieve the best balance possible in the frame. One of the most strikingly obvious changes to the Spindrift is the re-positioning of the rear shock.
Not only does this better protect the shock from rear wheel spray, Propain also claims this helps to boost frame balance and overall agility on the trail. The rear triangle is asymmetrical, with a stiffness boosting near-vertical bracing strut on the non-driveside of the bike. Propain has upped the level of anti-squat from 60 to per cent in a bid to make it a little easier going when you do need to pedal. Propain has sweated the details on the new Spindrift.
These should help prevent damage from rock strikes and silence that ever so pesky chainslap when the going gets rough. This is designed to work with pretty much every drivetrain out there and should you clatter your rear derailleur into something, the UDH should rotate backwards to help preserve the derailleur. Reach on the size medium is a decent mm and extends up to mm on the extra-large.
To help balance those relatively lengthy front ends, Propain has opted to go for a reasonably long effective chainstay of mm across all sizes to help give a more balanced, centred feel between the wheels. SRAM supplies all drivetrain components. Rob is a riding encyclopaedia of bikes and kit. He spends a lot of time travelling the world for the latest product launches and organising how and where Bikeradar's and MBUK's gear gets tested.
Both the mixed wheeler and full 29er size range from medium through to extra-large The rear shock has been repositioned ahead of the seat tube.
Propain is now offering the new mm travel Spindrift with either an aluminium or carbon frame. Steve Behr. A vertical bracing strut helps create the stiffness needed on the asymmetrical rear triangle.
Propain has moved the rear shock of the Spindrift forwards, so it now sits ahead of the seat tube and inside the front triangle.

The functionality of the heart is therefore completely unchanged, but the shock is now positioned in front of the seat tube and perfectly integrated into the main frame. The new Spindrift is even more balanced and agile than before, due to the changed arrangement of the rear end.
Colours and Decals Carbon The new primary frame colours of the carbon version of the Spindrift is "Moongrey Dark gloss " and "Lime gloss ". The colour "Carbon Raw gloss " is already known from the Tyee. With a visible varnish it gets the unique look and the special processing of the Blend Carbon becomes visible.

The Spindrift is their big-hit single-crown model, featuring mm of rear wheel travel, with 29", There's also now a full-carbon frame to go along with the aluminum models. Wondering where the name Spindrift comes from? It actually wasn't dreamed up in a marketing office. When founders Robert Krause and Markus Zander were on a road trip on Vancouver Island a while ago they decided at some point that the next crossroad would decide their next model's name.

The benchmark Fox Factory 36 fork up front with a whopping mm of travel start the ball rolling well. Look past the stock tyre choice not our chosen rubber but an easy thing to change and point the nose down a hill and this long travel Propain seems to make sense. Silent but deadly, the Spindrift inspires speed and confidence in a trail even when the going gets tough.
The Even when the inevitable happens and you have to pedal back up after a blast down, the Propain still seems to come out fighting. There are only a few small negatives to talk about when it comes to the Spindrift. A simple tune or damper swap should sort this out like a charm though. So the other negative is the daps that have been specified. The Onza tyres currently do not compare to the performance of our benchmark Maxxis equivalent.
In the bigger picture these are both minor issues that can be easily solved. The slack seat tube angle also causes some issues when attacking a steep climb when sat down, with the front wheel becoming wayward and light.Nico eikelenboom
Low, slack and packing a full mm of travel! All in all a bike designed for business. The positives on the Spindrift outweigh the negatives with it being merely components and a damper tune holding it back.Glock 45 cal compact
Do not think this is an all day mile muncher, as the angles and long travel mean this is a bike that is designed for descending. This Propain has mm of travel on tap and almost DH bike geometry but with the ability to climb back to the top if you choose to.
Forthe Spindrift offers mm travel, is available with either a carbon or an and aluminium frame and you can choose between Read on to find out why. But the bike is capable of so much more than the bikes from the past. The new Spindrift is a real jack of all trades. The shock is now located in the front triangle, but Propain continue to rely on their so-called PRO10 virtual pivot point suspension system.
This has been revised for the Spindrift, giving it significantly more anti-squat than its predecessor to allow it to climb more efficiently.
The leverage ratio has been designed in such a way that the bike works with both coil and air shocks. The bike offers mm travel at the rear, which you can combine with either a mm or even mm travel fork. Depending on the frame size, you can also order the bike with either You can now also choose between carbon and aluminium for the frame of the new Spindrift.
As usual, the extensive online configurator allows you pick the components to suit your preferences and budget — brilliant! Propain describe themselves as a brand run by riders for riders. Common points of criticism on the current TYEE enduro bike are the cable routing under the bottom bracket and the overly hard chainstay protector.
Both aspects have been improved on the Spindrift. Instead of being routed under the bottom bracket, the cables are now neatly routed along the side of the frame.
The chainstay protector should also be softer and dampen the chain better. As one of the very first brands, Propain offer the new Spindrift with three wheel size configurations. The small Instead of relying on a flip-chip, Propain use a different rear end for each wheel size. For the mullet setup, they combine the 29er front triangle with the The angles and the bottom bracket are adjusted by lowering the axle of the rear wheel.
For smaller riders, the size S the Spindrift is exclusively available with In sizes M and L, you can choose from all three variants.
If you look at the various geometry data, you can see that apart from the chainstay length and the bottom bracket drop, there are hardly any differences between the mixed and 29er options. The geometry of the Spindrift is up to date and balanced.
The head angle is a slack If there is anything to criticize, it is the still relatively long seat tubes which unnecessarily limit the length of the dropper post and may make it difficult for riders to choose the larger frame size if they prefer having a longer reach. Otherwise, the figures of the Spindrift seem to be well balanced and coherent. The reason for this is the online configurator which not only allows you to choose the components of the bike but also to customise the paintwork and decals.
This is also the case with the new Spindrift. Propain offer the bike in both aluminium and carbon versions, each of which comes in three pre-configured options which you can then adapt to suit your preferences. If you want, you can also configure the build from the ground up.
Among other things, the reason for this is the excessive logistical complexity it would add to their already considerable warehouse management.
